WHAT IS  GIS?                                                                                                                                              GIS (short for geographic information system) is an area of information technology that uses geography as the foundation for Problem Solving and Analysis.The Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) a commercial software developer and a leader in GIS has published a brief conceptual introduction to GIS.                                                                                                                                                                       MAYORS YOUTH TECHNOLOGY CORPS (MYTC) -- DETROIT                                                                          Eastern Michigan University, in cooperation with the Detroit Public Schools, the City of Detroit Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the Environmental System Research Institute Inc., proposes to develop the Mayor's Youth Technology Corps in Detroit. MYTC-Detroit, designed as a NSF-ITEST-Youth Based Program, offers resources, support, and opportunities for strengthening science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) informal education.

VIRTUAL IMMERSION IN SCIENCE INQUIRY FOR TEACHERS (V.I.S.I.T.)                                                          V.I.S.I.T. is an Online resource for secondary school teachers who wish to develop and refine their geospatial technology(GIS) skills. Teachers are encouraged to participate in ongoing scientific investigations involving contemporary problems in their localities. These problems are investigated by applying geospatial analysis technologies. V.I.S.I.T. is a three-year project supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation Teacher Enhancement program.

WORK/SITE ALLIANCE                                                                                                                                   Work/Site Alliance - Community Based GIS Education is a project funded by the National Science Foundation. This project developed GIS case studies that provides high school teachers and undergraduate faculty an opportunity to conduct and manage projects for educational puropses. The case studies provide detailed hands-on exercises using ArcView software and real data from Work/Site Alliance projects.
